3D Max to Unity export

Recommended Posts

Tutorial on how to correctly export mesh from 3D max to Unity.

Correct export means

  • (Optional) Mesh name
  • Correct rotation axis
  • Scale 1:1

1. Naming the mesh

Mesh name can't be edited in Unity, so it makes sense naming it correctly.

Simply select the mesh and rename the mesh whatever you like.

Before any export always reset the xform! This is always a must for all static non-animated meshes.

  • Select the mesh
  • Go to Utilities
  • Toggle the rest XForm
  • Reset the Xform

  • Then go back to modify

Now your rotation will be correct in Unity.

3. Correct scale

In fbx export settings set scale units to Meters and y-up.

No more incorrect scales or rotations.

Note that you should almost always disable light, animations and cameras in fbx export settings to reduce the file size.

On import and placement in scene you will get such results.
