Blender has an 3DS Max Import option File>>Import>>.3ds, then export it as FBX? This may not work with .max files though I'm not sure, .max files don't get used much anymore as max 2014+ export as .3ds files now

.max files can only be opened with 3DS Max just like .blend files can be opened with .blend.

Send me the .max file and I'll open it up and export it as FBX for you. :)

Autodesk has a software that allows you to convert 3ds files to fbx.

In my experience didnt have any luck using this or importing in blender. Could be an issue with the files. I had someone convert them for me on 3ds max. Then Import the FBX in blender, fix a couple things, maybe textures, take out cameras and lights...all that tedious stuff.

To end the process I run the rotation fixer, which converts the axes in blender to the right rotation in unity3d

Use a  new version of 3ds max, since 3ds max 2012 for example cannot open a .max file made with 3ds max 2018.
